Although you cannot cure a case of scabies without prescription medication from a doctor, there are certain things you can do at home to keep from re-infecting yourself or your family.

* Wash all clothing, towels, and bed linens that you have used in the last three days. Use hot water. You should use the dryer at high heat rather than air drying. Since the mites can survive on nonliving objects for several days, place the objects that are not machine washable (such as coats and stuffed toys) into a bag and store for a week.

* Use the medication as prescribed and instructed. Do not use it more than instructed because you risk causing chemical irritation of your skin.

* You can also treat itching with antihistamine medications such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl), hydroxyzine (Atarax), cetirizine (Zyrtec), and promethazine (Phenergan).

* Cut your nails, and clean under them thoroughly to remove any mites or eggs that may be present.

* Thoroughly vacuum your rugs, furniture, bedding, and car interior and throw the vacuum-cleaner bag away when finished.

* Try to avoid scratching. Keep any open sores clean.

Benadryl really helps but at the same time it makes it hard to realize if you still have scabies or post scabies, so typically i have been using benadryl for 3 weeks after scabies then i wait a couple weeks to see if im in post scabies by seeing if i feel the fluttering type of pin prick things. If so liekly im reinfested.

Keeping your nails cut and clean is a good way to avoid being reinfected by scabies. They tend to attach themslves around hte nail and between folds of skin like knuckles and fingers.

Is there any precaution for cleaning around your workspace/keyboard. I seem to get infested again on my fingers which is likely coming from my keyboard.

I have had the same thing on my laptop, have used compressed air, put it in a bag, sprayed with dermasil spray and still I don't feel comfortable using it. Not sure what to do either....fd

The key is making sure you place the keyboard in a oxygen sealed container or bag for a few days while you treat. Or just buy a whole new keyboard to avoid reinfestation from your keyboard. Maybe a preventitive measure would be to seal it before you go to bed or something that way it gives you time that the scabies will die off.
