I think the only way to determine this is via getting a skin scraping from your doctor. This would be the only way to know if you have scabies mites or bird mites.

I am trying to figure this out as well, I had recently broken out in a few rashes in typical places I would never get them before with acne or rosecea. I have yet to really itch at all and think I may have come across scabies from children. I will wait a week or two and if I start itching from the scabies I will then go see a doctor immediatly, or I mite just get a natural treatment online and give that a shot as more of a precaution. Infact that is what I am going to do to keep my mind at ease as I have enough stuff to worry about.

Rat and Bird mites can only live on people for like a month, they need to live on a proper host, that is why they are called bird mites or rat mites. I know that scabies can not live on other animals they have different names like mange. Though I do know that animals can pass on staph infections or be a carrier of scabies or mites but they can not get them. Vs Versa with humans.
