The mites’ infestation starts with one female mite within the surface of your skin. After being impregnated, she migrates around the skin in order to look for the new host or to look for a place to create a permanent burrow. For the most part, these female mites would look for areas with crevices and folds, such as the waist, under the arms, between the fingers, on the wrists and around the genital regions. The male mites would die immediately after mating, whereas the female mites continue to live for a month.

As soon as the female mite starts digging her tunnels, she lays 2-3 eggs each day. These eggs are about 0.10 – 0.15mm in length. These eggs would hatch in 3-4 days, inside the burrow. Out of these eggs, it is believed that 90% of them are females and 10% turn out to be males. These 6 legged larvae would remain burrowed within the female mite for a day and then start excavating on their own.

Larvae grow and would change form by changing their exoskeleton thrice, before reaching adulthood. Each stage takes about 2-3 days and requires the excavation of new hair follicle or the moulting pouch. As soon as they complete the final moult, they turn into adults capable of reproducing with 8 legs. A female can lay up to 60-90 eggs in her life span. On most occasions, the burrows would take an ‘S’ shape. The male mites are harmless and reside on the shallow areas of the skin surface. They feed on the human host as long as they find the female mite.
