Bed bugs are tiny creatures and are extremely difficult to spot during the day. However, there are a few signs you need to be aware of, so as to pick on the bed bugs at the time of moving into your new home. Bed bugs are nocturnal in nature and hence are found to be active when the human host is asleep. They often leave telltale traces which need to be found, especially if you were to detect the infestation in any place.

For the most part, an infested room would give out a characteristic sweet or musty odour, just like the smell of fresh coriander or red raspberries. However, such an odor may not seem natural in most places with the infestation. A buyer must also look for crawling and active bugs on carpets, bed linens and furniture. You would also be able to see dark blood or faecal stains on creases, seams, folds and tufts of box springs and mattresses. The buyers must also look for pear-shaped egg deposits or smears along the baseboards, headboards, window or door casings, and other crevices. Old exoskeletons and nymph molts could be found under the carpet edges, rugs and beneath the storage containers. More often than not, bed bugs are found feeding on the dead creatures in the attic of the house; however they prefer easier food sources such as humans.

Although voiding smears, odour and bites are indicators of bed bugs infestation. However, these creatures mostly go undetected at the time when the symptoms are not this obvious. Bed bugs could be easily confused with other bugs such as rodent mites, carpet beetles, parasitic wasps and spider beetles. Ask the previous owner if a bed bug problem has been detected in any of the units before.
