There are many ways to start a bed bug invasion. One of the most common ways is through providing transportation. Travelers, especially those visiting other countries, unknowingly provide this transportation, as they allow bed bugs to bum rides on the traveler's luggage. Even clothes can contain bed bugs bound for new homes.

The rule of thumb when traveling abroad is to pay attention to whether or not your destination is a known hot spot for bed bug infestations. They are everywhere, all over the world, so no one region is exempt. Get into the habit when going places away from home of sleeping on fresh bed sheets and blankets, and take care to clean your clothes before you pack them up to come home. Places such as hotels and motels are notorious rendezvous points for the unsuspecting traveler and its bed bug companions.

Once bed bugs invade a home, they usually set up quarters as close to their food as they can get. We are their food. So they habituate near us. This means in our beds, blankets, couches, chairs and the carpeting around this furniture. Because these insects have flat bodies, it is easy for them to slip between the cracks and folds of bed sheets to disappear after gorging on our blood. Bed bugs only come out at night to eat, hiding during the day, which is why you don't know you have a bed bug invasion until it is way too late to handle them easily.

While we sleep at night, the bed bugs come out to play and feast. Chow time for a bed bug can last anywhere from five to ten minutes. As their body bloats with the blood intake, their bodies get bigger, and their reddish-brown hue takes on a darker red. The head back into hiding to digest their food and take a nap until the next night, when they come out and do it all over again.

Bed bugs are no dummies, always on the lookout for those who seek to do them harm. When they are agitated, they will haul their wingless bodies around quickly until they find a proper escape route from any danger. This is part of the reason for their nocturnal eating habits. They'll eat during the day if they have to. The can get around your house through the walls, where the plumbing and electrical wiring run.
