So what exactly is ringworm? It is a skin condition, an infection that has been caused by a type of fungus. For instance, the common jock itch is considered to be a type of ringworm, occurring in the groin area of your skin and developing into an irritating rash. Women get this type of ringworm far less than men do. It is believed that jock itch originates as athlete's foot, where the fungus that causes this foot condition makes its way to the groin area.

Contrary to its name, it is not worms that bring about ringworm. Fungus is the culprit that causes this irritating condition. Especially the kinds of fungi that live and migrate across the first layer of your skin, as well as on the surface of your hair. The warmer and wetter the environment, the greater the chances that the fungus will survive and thrive. This is why the condition is so prevalent in the swimming pools and locker rooms we all frequent. On your body, anywhere that your skin folds over is a great place for these fungi to live and spread.

The condition of ringworm is very contagious, and can be transferred between people through a couple of different means of transportation, such as skin on skin, both between people and from animal to human. Towels, sports equipment and clothes can also help pass the problem along.

So, while it is true that petting a cat or a dog that has ringworm can cause you to pick it up, it is not quite as common an occurrence as when you share towels and sports gear, or touch the skin of an infected person.

How can you tell if you are infected with ringworm? It starts with an extremely irritating itch due to a rash on your skin. It gets its name from the ring shaped rash, but ringworm doesn't always come in that form. Oftentimes it is just merely a raw, itchiness that develops.

As stated above, jock itch is a form of ringworm, and this rash finds its way in your groin area. You could also find it spreading throughout that region, most likely to your buttocks and inner thigh areas. You can also experience athlete's foot infecting your hands; you’ll recognize this by the thickening of your skin on the palms of your hand. The skin here also gets dried out and flaky. The areas between your fingers will become moist with open sores appearing throughout.
