Dermatophyosis, or ringworms as they are found in humans, is the most common type of fungal infection that people can find on their skin. But, regardless of what the rumor mill suggests, ringworms aren't always in the shape of nice little rings that appear on the skin. Also, these infections are not the result of an invasion by worms. so, why call this fungus a ringworm? After all, this fungus comes in several different shapes and sizes, but the bottom line is, this fungus is just a fungus.

Did you know that the yellow fungus found under toe nails are a type of ringworm? Not only the skin and toe nails are susceptible to this type of fungal infection. You can find types of ringworm on the scalp, areas of exposed skin like the arms and legs, along hands and feet, and in the groin. It just goes to show you that ringworm can be found all over your body.

Fungal infections are part of one of two groups, known as the deep and the superficial. The good part is that ringworms fall under the superficial kind of fungal infections and are therefore not too serious a problem. Even so, some people can have deep emotional and physical problems that can be attributed to a case of ringworm. Because of this, it is a great idea for you to treat the problem the moment it is known to exist, and not wait until the problem can grow into one of a more serious nature.

Ringworms are not just a problem with humans. It can attack many kinds of animals, from sheep and cattle to dogs and cats. There are numerous kinds of fungi in the world that can result in a case of ringworms, along with its various clinical examples. Because of this, diagnosing the problem as a case of ringworm is often a difficult thing for doctors to do.

The fungus at the center of the infection are kept alive by eating the keratin that our top layer of skin, nails and hair contain. This parasite does better in both damp and warm environments, hence the reason ringworm is prevalent in the scalp and along the feet. Ringworm in the scalp happens because the moisture and heat are kept within the follicles of hair, and the feet get ringworm because of the wetness and warm temperatures contained inside the shoes.

The good news is that the ringworm infection has undergone a great deal of research, to determine what medications and treatments work best against this infection. This means that the condition is curable. So much so that you would be hard-pressed not to find over the counter medications dedicated to the cure of ringworms. Usually a topical cream designed as an antifungal medication would be enough to do the job.
