Impetigo: What It Is And How To Treat It Options · View

Impetigo is a skin ailment brought about by an invasion of bacteria. It is very contagious and can infect kids from three to six years old. The beginning of this infection can be caught through diagnosis by noticing small red spots along the edges of the nose and mouth that develop a yellow layer of crust after a while. Sometimes, as is the case with bullous impetigo, the blisters -- which are filled with fluid -- can grow bigger and take a bit longer to open. There are three classifications of impetigo, all named from what the symptoms look like. As mentioned, there is the bullous impetigo class, non-bullous impetigo, and Ecthyma.

Infections of one of these classification types happen when the bacteria known as staph get under one's skin through an open wound or sore on the surface. An example would be the Staphylococcus Aureus. Something as simple as a bug bite can cause the breach the bacteria needs to get into place to cause an infection. The bacteria will then set about looking to attack the proteins that are keeping the skin cells together, and work its way around to other areas of your body. People can also get impetigo by being touched by someone infected by it already, even touching some of their belongings.

Some severe impetigo situations can cause PSGN or other cases of staph, like Cellulitis or MRSA. PSGN is where impetigo develops into a kidney infection, and happens when the filters that aid waste removal from the kidney become infected.

In order to take care of impetigo, you can be treated using either an oral antibiotic or even ointments designed to kill bacteria. What you end up using for your treatment is dependent on what type of impetigo you have contracted, and how bad the infection has gotten. Typically, on less severe cases of infection, where lives are not on the line, doctors will just put people in those cases on a particular ointment treatment, where the ointment is put on the skin where the infection has broken through below the surface. But if the case is extreme enough, or lives are threatened due to an invasion of deadly bacteria in the system, then oral antibiotics may be called to task.

Prevention is best when it comes to impetigo, so keeping yourself clean, and treating any cuts or open wounds in a timely and complete manner is ideal. So is trimming and cleaning your nails, and not getting involved with anyone who is currently infected. Stay away from their clothes and belongings, and don't share blankets or towels with them. Make sure that anyone you know who is suffering from impetigo covers up their infected areas so that the spreading of the problem can be far less than simply ignoring it and hoping it goes away.
