Ring worm in a cat can be simply diagnosed by looking at the lesion. However, it is best if you use at least one of the testing methods to diagnose the problem. This way you can be sure of the problem and use proper medications to get the disease cured. One of the methods used in diagnosing the problem is the backlight called the Wood’s Lamp. There are several species of ring worm fungus that will glow a fluorescent color when they are exposed to a Wood’s lamp. If the doctor finds any such color, then he may be sure about what treatment to propose. Again, it is also estimated that almost half of all the types of M Canis fungi do not fluoresce under a Wood’s lamp.

Sometime when using a Wood’s lamp, you may find other types of fungi that fluoresce instead of the ring worm causing fungi. This may sometimes mislead the doctor. Hence, few other tests may also be performed in order to reach a logical and true conclusion before prescribing medication. There are other methods to diagnose the problem too. The veterinarian may like to pluck hairs from the affected area or the lesion and have them examined under the microscope. Usually 40% to 70% of the infections are diagnosed in this manner. However, till date, the most reliable method has been to collect scales from the infected area and having a fungus culture being performed on them. The veterinarian usually uses a toothbrush to collect the crust or scales to be examined. There are special mediums used for culture and to identify ring worm infections.
If a cat is healthy and short haired and is affected with ring worm, oral or topical treatment may be used. Usually, the lesions may be clipped so that the topical treatment can reach where it is needed. Veterinarians also often agree that long-haired cats must be clean shaven in order to get the treatment done effectively. In case of a severe infection both topical and oral treatment is provided. Usually lime sulphur dips are suggested for treating ring worm. These dips can have a bad odor and may also turn the coat to a yellowish color. However, you must know that they are extremely affective and are highly recommended by your veterinarian.

Make sure you also get anti-fungal shampoo for your cat. This is needed to keep the fur clean in case you have decided against shaving off its fur.
