Scabies is a highly contagious and nagging skin condition, which left untreated, will worsen. Though not a disease that one needs to worry about, it's one skin condition, that none will want to encounter ever! There are many ways to treat and prevent scabies reinfection.

The most commonly prescribed treatment options in the older days were Permethrin cream, Crotamiton and Ivermectin. Permethrin but now most turn to sulfur treatments as they yield better results. It's the best as compared to other options. Crotamiton is not as effective as is Permethrin, but effective and non toxic. It's also soothing and comparatively lesser in price. Ivermectin is yet another drug, that can be taken orally and also applied tropically. Though effective, lindane is highly toxic and hence no longer recommended.

The other common suggestions include benzyl benzoate and sulfur based preparations. Most doctors suggest tropical applications initially and only for stubborn scabies, oral medicines are recommended. Due to it's contagious nature and ability to reinfect, not just the patient, but the entire household is treated, to eradicate the infection completely.

In most cases, scabies is a curable skin condition. When the problem persists even after oral medication, the doctors might suggest tests to determine underlying diseases. HIV, Leukemia are the most common problems that causes scabies, which does not subside with treatment.

Infected person's underwear and clothes are suggested to be washed separately. Even better, is to use hot water for washing the clothes. During the course of treatment and after that, vacuuming carpets, upholstery, etc is important. This will ensure removal of any dried skin from reinfecting the household.

Creams and lotions like calamine are suggested to bring down itching and soothe the skin. More often than not, scars and abrasions are due to itching. Itching often leads to secondary infection and hence, it's better to abstain from scratching the affected area.

Many people prefer natural treatment for treating any problem. Natural treatments are safe, often free of side effects and effective. For this reason, many prefer opting for natural remedies. However, care should be taken to seek medical attention, when natural remedies fail to show results after prolonged usage.

The most common natural remedy to releive the itch is Tea Tree Oil, which is well know for it's antiseptic properties. It's an oil with several benefits and one such benefit, is it's anti-parasitic quality. Owing to it's cost, it's not possible to use it as a concentrate, so it's best to mix it with vegetable oil and apply all over the body. Not only that, concentrated tea tree oil can cause burning sensation and tea tree oil is not a scabies cure.

Neem, an Indian tree and known for it's therapeutic properties, is also an effective remedy for scabies. Yes, neem paste, mixed with turmeric is a deadly combination for scabies. While neem is effective as a standalone remedy, combining it with turmeric, is really effective. The success rate is a whopping 98%!

The other effective natural remedies include:

Using citrus preparations while taking a shower. Citrus preparations are applied tropically and rinsed off once dry. Applying essential oils like peppermint oil or neem oil everyday. It's important to check for allergies and dilute if needed. Last but not the least, taking a cold water shower and using calamine or other soothers for reducing itch.

Both natural remedies and prescription remedies are effective, depending on the person and the severity of the infection, a suitable method can be chose. It's advisable to consult a doctor, before using any other the above mentioned methods, or remedies.
