Bed Bugs are parasites that belong to the family of Cimicidae. They are flat, oval and in red or brown color, while juvenile ones look transparent. Unlike the common perception, Bed Bugs can survive in any environment that's warm and has lot of hiding place, and not unclean places. There are many types, though about three types feed on human blood.

Most Bed Bugs suck blood, without the knowledge of the host. Though they are nocturnal, they typically show up at night, to suck blood and hence not easy to detect. They are filled in less fifteen minutes and go into hiding immediately after that.

Bed Bugs have high survival rate and can withstand any abrupt change in temperature. They can survive even in 10 Deg Celsius or less and up to 40 Degree Celsius. Anywhere from 45 – 46 Degree Celsius, they tend to die.

Bed Bugs can go up to a year without food, though they feed every three, or four days. However, the recent pest resistant varieties, don't survive without feeding for over two weeks. Bed Bugs were almost eradicated post World War II, only to surface frequently. The outburst reason is yet to ascertained.

Bed Bugs are not known to transmit any diseases, but their bites can be allergic. Though few don't notice any allergic reactions, few suffer severe reactions with visible and red blisters, itching and pain.

The most common reasons for the invasion of Bed Bugs, could be attributed to frequent travel, bringing pets to the bed room, using common places like hotels, guest houses, hospitals, refugee camps, etc.

Bed Bugs are often mistaken for small roaches, tick, etc. However, Bed Bugs can be really messy, be it a workplace, or home. It's extremely difficult to deal with them personally and will often require professional assistance.

There are no specific treatment for rashes due to bed bug bites. When itching is severe, steroid cream, or alcohol is used. However, it's often mild and never needs medical attention.

Masked hunters, cockroaches, mice, ants, spiders and centipedes are considered natural enemies of Bed Bugs, though they can't be used to eliminate them in a family abode. The pesticides used to eradicate them include dichlorvos , pyrethroids and malathion. Many people prefer using a vacuum to eradicate them.

Face, neck and hands are the most common targets for Bed Bugs. They are attracted to their prey due to warmth, carbon dioxide and few other chemical reactions. Many don't report any pain during the bite and most often sleep though the pain.

Fewer people have reported to waking up a warm feeling near the neck, face or hands, only to realize an army of bed bugs are feeding on them! It can be a horrifying, disturbing and terrifying sight! Prevention is the best solution for averting these nasty creatures and keeping them at bay.
