Ringworm is not a parasitic infection, it is actually a fungal infection of the skin surface. Ringworm gets its name from the stereotypical ring shaped rash that appears on the skin of those infected with this fungus. Ringworm does occasionally appear with an atypical rash that may cover large areas of the skin or be irregular in shape. Ringworm only really gets bad on people with compromised immune systems. Most of the time it is a small circular rash composed of raised red pustules. Anti-fungal creams and medications are among the best treatments for ringworm.

When ringworm is identified, it can usually be treated with over the counter medications. Many of these anti-fungal creams used are well-known name brands such as, Desenex cream, Lotrimin cream, Monistat-Derm cream, and Lamisil cream and solution. These creams contain one of a number of anti-fungals including, clotrimazole, miconazole, ketoconazole, econazole, naftifine and terbinafine.

The cream is applied several times daily to the infected area for up to two weeks. After this time, the sufferer should begin to see improvement in the fungal infection. If there is no improvement and the infection remains stubborn, it is time to see a doctor about an oral medication.

Before prescribing an oral medication the doctor will examine the infection to diagnose it as ringworm. Usually it is simple to diagnose ringworm from its appearance on the body. Those cases of ringworm that are irregular or cover the entire body will require a scraping by the doctor and testing at labs to confirm the diagnosis. As soon as the diagnosis is made the doctor can then move onto an appropriate treatment protocol.

Oral medications are referred to as a systemic treatment, or the treatment of the whole body. These medications are resorted to only if the ringworm does not respond to topical creams. It may be necessary to use an oral medication for a ringworm infection of the nails. Doctors will prescribe one of a number of oral medications a treatment for ringworm such as, terbinafine, itraconazole, fluconazole, and griseofulvin. These medications are given for a period of three months to hopefully completely eradicate the ringworm infection.

Ringworm is a fungal infection that can occur anywhere on the body, but most often appears on the scalp, groin or feet and nails. A few different varieties of ringworm exist, but these anti-fungal medications will treat all of them.
