Scabies is one of the prevalent parasitic infections, occurring to people all across the globe. There are about 300 million people suffering from the condition on an annual basis. The arthropod that causes scabies in humans is called “sarcoptes scabiei var hominis”. These mites are burrowed deep within the surface of the skin and would cause severe itching. It would affect people of all ages, regardless of the ethnicity or genders.

Scabies infestation has been existent since 2500 years now and was originally referred by Aristotle as “lice in flesh”. It was later recognised as a parasite in the year 1687 by Giovan Cosimo Bonomo. It was one of the first conditions amongst human beings, to be caused by a particular pathogen.

These mites that would cause scabies in humans would complete a full life cycle on the human hose. Other variations of the parasites can also cause infestation in cats, dogs, ferrets and pigs. The female mites would initially lay eggs beneath the surface of the skin and they would hatch in about 3-4 days. For the most part, about 90% of the produced mites would die. The female mites would remain fertile all her life and the male mites would die shortly after mating. The produced larvae would turn into bigger nymphs and turn into adults. The mites would keep reproducing until they are completely eliminated from the skin. The infestation can also spread to other human beings since the mites are in constant look-out for the newer host. Furthermore, the infestation can affect the other parts of the body as well.
