These eggs hatch in three to ten days and proceed to develop from the larval to adult stage burrowed within the host’s skin. It is the reaction of the human body to the waste materials excreted by the burrowed mites that provoke an allergic reaction which leads to the skin manifestations and itching.

The mites that cause scabies require a human host in order to survive; they can only live for less than 36 hours when left without a host. As such, transmission of the disease requires direct and prolonged skin-to-skin contact to transmit the parasite from person to person. Casual contact such as handshakes are usually insufficient for communicability, but sexual contact or prolonged hugging and hand holding can be a source for becoming infected.

Once a person is infected symptoms may not manifest themselves for up to two weeks. Initial signs of scabies will be the appearance of a rash and fine dark lines on the skin which will develop into itching and eventually causing the skin over the infection to become scaly and scabbed. Scabies can be treated with specialized creams that are topically applied to the infected region and surrounding skin tissue for a 1 to 2 week period. If one suspects that one is infected with scabies, a dermatologist should be consulted for confirmation of the diagnosis and treatment. It is also suggested that you try using natural scabies treatments before applying any pesticides to your body as they can cause cancer and other post secondary skin infections.
