The common bed bug has evolved from the bat nest and bird parasites. In addition, Climex Lectaularius is the scientific name for this creature. Bed bugs are little nocturnal insects which hide in dark cracks and crevices during the day, whereas they feed on the human blood at night. They have flattened; oval bodies are usually darkish brown in colour. The adult bed bugs are known to be the size of an apple seed, from about 3/8 to ¼ inch in length. Before they start feeding, these creatures are flat as a paper surface; however they become dark red and bloat with the blood they consume, just like the common tick.

Bed bugs would puncture the skin for a few minutes - from 3 to 10 minutes. At the time when they puncture the skin, these insects would eject some form of an anaesthetic, which can cause allergic reactions in humans. This anaesthetic can also cause red and itchy welts that could cause discomfort to the hosts. It may take a few days for the welts to appear, however not all sufferers may show a reaction to bed bug bites and hence it could delay detection.

In a lifespan of one-year, a female bed bug could produce as many as 500 eggs, which is approximately 5 eggs a day. These eggs are pretty small and are hardly visible to the naked eye. These eggs are like the size of the pinhead, pear-shaped and whitish. Since these eggs are sticky in nature, they can easily stick to cements, carpets, furniture and beds.
