In the last few years, there have been numerous reports on the news concentrating on bed bugs that have been discovered in posh hotels, triggering a slew of lawsuits that have been filed by hotel guests who have been attacked by numerous bed bugs while staying at these upscale establishments. After staying the night in hotel rooms, they have awakened to hundreds of bites on their skin as a result of bed bug infestations. Sites like TripAdvisor routinely post information, along with pictures, that validates claims of bed bugs staying in hotels without reservations.

The question is, how did the bed bugs get there?

Bed bugs live in several places that by its nature should answer this question. They have been found living in bed linens, clothes and furniture, often laying their eggs right alongside their nests. This includes especially clothes and furniture that is used. They spread themselves far and wide by moving from place to place, being replaced by their offspring, who carry on their quest to infest. The many rooms in a home or the many rooms in apartment complexes can quickly become overrun by the small insects. How they make it into hotel rooms, then, becomes less of a mystery when you realize that all of that luggage, souvenirs and people in their many layers of clothing can act as transportation to bring bed bugs into hotel rooms. All of this can go completely unnoticed, since bed bugs are not that visible during the day.

How can you tell if you've been made a meal for bed bugs?

Bed bugs feed off of human blood. They are nocturnal, and go for any part of the human skin that is not covered by clothing or linen, while the person is asleep. This means that the most common places for bites from bed bugs are the hands, neck and face areas. Being bitten by bed bugs is not a painful thing, and rarely if ever does anyone notice when it they are being feasted upon by a bed bug. What will eventually be noticed is a flat, small or even raised bumpy area on the skin that can become red and itchy, even swelling up. Scratching the irritating bite can cause an infection. The odd thing about bed bug bites is that they are often found to be aligned in an even row. The joke around disease experts is that this is known as the breakfast, lunch and dinner that shows how the bed bugs feed in sequential order.
