Scabies, the infection has been traced worldwide and is known to affect people of all races and classes. The infection is known to spread fast when there are a lot of people in the same place and of them few might be infected too. It quickly spreads from a skin-to-skin contact between people who are infected and those who are not. Hence, places like child care facilities, hospitals, nursing homes and the like are where you can get infected very soon if there are patients infected with scabies.
The disease is caused by the infestation of the scabies mite Sarcoptes scabiei. It spreads by direct as well as prolonged contact with an infected skin. Just a quick handshake or a very swift touch will not affect you. It can be easily spread between sexual partners or also if you share clothing, towels as well as bedding with an infected person.

The symptoms for scabies may be slow and maybe gradually visible. It slowly begins by a minor rash accompanied by itching. This itching will tend to get worse by night. With scratching, the mites may spread to other parts of the body and with several weeks, the condition might get worse.

Common scabies symptoms may include:

-Irritations in the form of pimples, burrows or even rash on the skin.
-Itching (intense) that aggravates at night and on most parts of the body.
-Scaling as well as redness due to extensive scratching.
-Sores caused from the scratching. These sores are also sometimes may be infected with bacteria.
-Small round lumps often times on the penis as well as the scrotum. This may remain on the area for several weeks even after treatment.
-Usually scabies infection can be found on the penis, knees, elbows, wrists, buttocks, breasts, shoulder blades and the webbing in between your fingers.
Diagnosis

When you visit the doctor to get a diagnosis of your condition, he will probably ask for the symptoms, perform some kind of physical exam and maybe also order a few tests to confirm. The burrows and the rashes will be inspected and the location of the rash is of utmost importance in diagnosis in addition to the appearance and the possible symptoms. Moreover, diagnosis for scabies can also be done by taking a skin scraping and examining it for mites, eggs or even mite fecal matter under a microscope. Since there are usually fewer than ten mites in the entire body of someone who is infested, may make it a little difficult for diagnosis.
