Scabies is caused by the itch mite Sarcoptes scabiei and the disease is highly contagious skin disease. These mites are small eight-legged parasites and measure about 1/3 millimeters long. They burrow into your skin and cause itching that gets worse at night. Usually the mites that infect humans are females about 0.3 millimeters to 0.4 millimeter long. The males are about half the size of the females. Scabies cause mites are visible with the help of a magnifying glass or a microscope. They crawl but cannot fly or jump and are absolutely immovable at a temperature below 20 degrees centigrade. Although they cannot move, they may still survive at this temperature.

Scabies infection is quite common and occurs worldwide. They usually occur in places like the nursing homes; long term care centers, hospitals and other similar institutions.

Can you get scabies?

Anyone can get infected with the disease. It spreads from a skin-to-skin contact with an infected person for a prolonged period of time. Just a shaking of hands or a quick hug may not be the cause of you getting scabies from another person. Even if they get transferred from the skin of your dog to your skin, you may feel a mild itchy sensation that goes away after a while. This is absolutely unlike the human scabies that may get worse before you get the condition treated with immediate effect.

What symptoms do scabies rash show on humans?

The disease produces a skin rash that has small red bumps and blisters that affect specific areas of your body. It may affect the webs between your fingers, the backs of your elbows, the axillary folds, knees, backs of your feet, the area around your nipples, your waist, the umbilicus and also the genital region and the buttocks. The bumps are known as papules and may also contain blood crusts. However, not every bump may be a bug. Usually in an infected adult, there are no more than 10 to 15 live mites affecting the body regardless of the number of bumps that you might have.

I am confused

I had scabies last month. it was awful. I think they're gone now. My feet still itch at night so I am not sure. My dr. told me to take benadryl for itching, which has helped. The terrible itching all over my body has stopped. I have been nonstop with laundry and cleaning for a month now.

I am still confused as to how I got scabies. I have friends who have a daughter whose school told them her hygiene must be improved as she was not changing clothes or showering. She would hug me all the time. I assumed because of her bad hygiene I got it from her. My friends have said that nobody in their house is scratching. Also, about 2 weeks into the scabie diagnosis I realized I had headlice. I had to call the dr. back and get prescription shampoo for this. My friends tell me nobody at their house has head lice either. There are mental health issues with these friends, and I am thinking they may not be being honest with me. They were very offended that they were called to the school to meet with teachers about this, and have said it is harassment and are suing. I can attest that the kid and her sister have pretty poor hygiene. Smell even :(

Is it possible to get scabies and/or head lice from furniture. I used to go this friends house often and lay around on their sofa watching tv with them. I cannot go there anymore. Im not sure if its psychosomatic but while there and when I get home, I itch on my body something awful.

Can people be carriers of these pests and not get the scabies or the head lice?

Nobody else hugs me. Only these friends. No intimate contact with anyone of recent months.

Also, I did bring home some used furniture (a love seat and a chair) that I have since had hauled to the dump thinking th efurniture was the culprit. But I was itchy at night time before I got the furniture. The woman who gave me the furniture told me its not possible that I got the bugs from it because people sat on it often and nobody else got scabies.

The prescription cream for scabies seems to have worked for me. I had a follow up drs appt last week and everything is gone.

Yeah if you diagnose scabies within a few days it seems people have luck with the permethrin cream, though in most cases you are going to need sulfur to treat scabies as they are really persistent and hard to kill as you have to kill the life cycle of the mite. As far as contracting them it is usually hard to figure out as signs and symptoms usually follow a couple weeks after initial contact.
