There are two steps that you need to take to be rid of bed bugs in your home permanently. First, you will vacuum your home has if your life depended on it, everywhere. Second, you will utilize a process to both prevent bed bugs or treat the condition should it occur. Bed bugs are tough little creatures that can go without a meal sometimes for months. Not only that, but they can resist extremely cold temperatures, which allows them to adapt to many situations. As long ago as the 1940s it was believed that bed bugs were completely gone from the world, due in part to both the widespread use of vacuum cleaners as well as DDT.

Recently, however, the dreaded bed bugs have made a grand re-emergence onto the world stage over the last decade or so. There can be numerous items to point fingers at as to why this problem has returned, including being complacent and thinking they were gone for good, as well as treatments that have become outdated, but the biggest reason can be attributed to an increase in traveling around the world for the everyday person.

Bed bugs know a good ride when they see one, and the appearance of traveler's luggage is just too good a ride to pass up. They will catch a ride on the nearest suitcase or clothing, and once at their new home, they will set up residence and resume what they have always done, which is eating, procreating and spreading to new homes.

There are six cycles in the lives of bed bugs: five in the juvenile stage and one in the adult stage. Adults can grow to be as large as 6 millimeters in length and get to where their food is by detecting heat and carbon monoxide. They don't go too far from their host (another word for you, the provider of their food) and are nocturnal, so you never see them hanging around during the day. They love to set up their nests in the nooks and crannies of mattresses and bedsheets, as well as any crevice around the sleeping quarters of the host, but they can make it as far away as the drawers, curtains, sofas, wallpaper, and even inside the smoke detectors. Having bodies that are rounded and flat make it easy for them to slip between the cracks unnoticed.

A person will first become aware of bed bug problems when they start to notice bite marks, which can be found pretty much anywhere along the body. Getting bit by a bed bug is not a painful ordeal, but it is the aftermath when dealing with the irritation and possible allergies that can become annoying. Aside from the bites left behind by these bed bugs, you can start to notice their multiple skin sheddings, known as molts, all over the sheets and upholstery. You may even find their droppings everywhere. If you see all of this, then you know you have a problem.

Vacuuming in this stage of the game is very important. Don't skimp, vacuuming anywhere and everywhere, stuffed animals, computer components, everywhere. What you'll want to do is take all of your items that are small enough to close up tightly in plastic bags so that you can examine them at another time for bed bugs, giving them enough time to expire. Get your vacuum tools deep into the cracks where bed bugs like to hide, then close these crevices with some kind of silicone sealant. Examine all of your furniture fully to make sure you don't miss any hiding places. After you've taken care of this seemingly daunting but worthwhile task, take the filled vacuum bag and seal it up thoroughly to keep the little critters from escaping their new homes Get rid of this bag quickly.

When you've completed the vacuuming stage, you are ready to move on to the next stage, which involves the use of chemicals to treat any and all areas. You will be applying these chemicals over a ten day period, three times per day, so that no bed bugs are left behind. Bed bugs are able to go without eating for several weeks, and then are able to continue their eating habits after this, so treating once or twice, or even three times, is not going to guarantee that you've rid your home of these bugs.
