For some people, it is no big deal if they come down with a case of ringworm. That's because there are so many effective treatments on the market today to help us take care of this type of skin infection. But there are a great many people who are so laid back when it comes to taking care of ringworm that they forget the most important preventive measure in stopping the spread of the infection, which is to cut way down on coming into contact with another person.

When we get ringworm on our body, there is a huge potential for it to spread elsewhere across to other areas. From just one single location, it can make its way to the fingers, groin or scalp, or any of our limbs, usually through sharing things like towels, sheets and clothes, as well as simply by scratching our skin when it itches. If we don't treat this as the serious problem it is, we will have to go through unnecessary suffering as it spreads. There is also a possibility that what started out as a simple infection can lead to a severe, even life-threatening, condition.

Other problems that can crop up are major reactions, along with side effects, that result from using medications like fungal killers over and over again to treat what essential is a fungal infection. There are two types of fungal infections: systemic and localized. Antifungal treatments that are systemic are taken orally or given by injection as a way of treating the infection, or are located deeper in the body that most other topical (surface) infections. Ointments and other similar topical treatments are used if the fungus is just on the skin and not very deep within it. but, if the infection doesn't subside or go away after just a few days, those affected will usually switch to a systemic treatment shortly thereafter.

Numerous side effects and major reactions have been documented concerning those using antifungal treatments on a continual basis. Even though it is a rare instance, there have been cases reported of allergic reactions from those who have used Fluconazole. There have also been many reports of itching and swelling, hives and even difficulty in breathing. Some extreme cases include problems with the stomach and intestines. Also, Ketoconazole has been known to initiate an anaphylactic reaction, stemming from allergies. This is a life-threatening situation. But, this is more the exception than the norm in documented cases of allergic reactions and side effects to ringworm treatment. Usually systemic antifungal treatments are hepatotoxic, meaning continueal usage, especially high doses, can damage one's liver. You'll know if your liver is affected if you are experiencing nausea, or your skin or sclera has turned yellow, or your stool has become pale, while your urine becomes dark. It can also be an unusual level of fatigue that is experienced.

These are all not even considering how having a case of ringworm can affect our social life, even our self-esteem, especially if the infected areas are easily seen and not able to be covered up in a naturally appearing way. This type of situation has been known to lead toward depression, not to mention other similar problems.

To stop these types of problems from occurring, getting into the habit of keeping yourself clean is a good idea. Also, don't think that ringworm is no big deal and can go ignored or untreated until it goes away on its own. Start treating the condition right away, and don't stop until the treatment is finished, so that you don't spread the infection to others. It is better in all cases to prevent the infection that to work at fighting it.
