Ring worm may bring the image of a squiggly worm but the fact is this fungal disease does not involve any kind of worm at all. This is a fungal disease of the skin that occurs among people who live in an extremely hot and humid climate. The disease derives its name from the shape of the lesion that it produces. There is a round ring like lesion that gives it its name.

Ring worms can be harmless or sometimes, painful but the good part is that they can be prevented and also treated. If you are suffering from ring worm or know a friend who is suffering from the same, you can help to cure it or prevent it from spreading further. Let us take a look at how you can help prevent the spread:

-Visit a doctor: You must first be sure that the infection that has occurred is in fact ring worm and not some other kind of similar disease. So, if required, do pay a visit to your family doctor and have him/her examine the lesion you may have. Your dermatologist will be able to help you with the exact nature of the disease and prescribe proper medication for it.

-Keep away from infected people: Ring worm spreads easily through the skin and can spread from contact with an already affected area. In other terms it is contagious. So, be cautious if you are sharing the same clothes or towel or toilet seats or any other personal belonging with another infected person. Domestic pets can also develop ring worm and you may develop them when you come in contact with such pets. If you know your pet is suffering from ringworm, then get it treated immediately so that no one else runs the risk of developing it. You may find much anti-fungal ointment for which you do not need any prescription.

-Handle pets carefully: Pet owners must be extra careful with their pets. It may be a little difficult to identify any problem with ring worm on your pet, but you must always check. Keep your pets clean and keep checking for symptoms like any discomfort, constant licking in any particular area of the body. Consult a dermatologist immediately if you do not know what to do. Also make sure that you handle pets with safety gloves on.

If you know someone is infected by ring worm, then it is advisable that you do not use any of his/her personal items and also do not get in contact with that person or you may run the risk of acquiring it from your friend.
