Scabies is a skin condition caused by microscopic mites, which burrow themselves under the skin. It's not visible to the naked eye and induces moderate to severe itching, in the host. It's otherwise called severe year itch and is a highly contagious skin disorder.

It's transmitted through direct skin contact, from one to the other. However, sharing belongings does not transmit the disease. It takes anywhere between four to six weeks for the manifestation of the disease and symptoms to appear, though reinfection takes less than twenty four hours. Since it takes longer time for the inset of the diseases, even after eradication, it takes time to be completely cured and free of symptoms.

Scabies is diagnosed by it's characteristic itching, alongside other symptoms and tests. The rashes appear in clusters and the scarring is often due to itching and not the skin condition by itself.

There are two types of scabies one the normal itching type and the other one, crusted scabies, which is considered a severe form of the condition. Crusted scabies is often due to immune suppression, resulting from immunity suppression drugs after organ transplant, or the result of immune disorders like HIV or Cancer.

There are both tropical and oral treatment options, which are chosen based on the severity of the condition. While scabies will need less than two weeks for results to manifest during treatment, crusted scabies, will take longer time to cure. This is because, the crust layer gives protection to the mites and makes it difficult to eradicate them faster.

For now, there is no vaccination for scabies. Since this condition is transmitted through skin contact, cleanliness does not have a say. When a person infected with scabies, or crusted scabies utilizes a room, it should be thoroughly cleaned before usage.

Irrespective of the age, gender or location, scabies can infect a person. It's estimated that a whopping 10% of the current population are affected by scabies. Scabies is considered to be an ancient skin condition, though can be treated effectively now.

A different species of mites, cause scabies in animals and the most commonly affected domestic animal is dog. When animals are affected, they tend to lose weight, become frail and succumb to the skin condition.

Though there are many treatment options, the person infected and the household are treated. This is to prevent reinfection and to avert others contracting the infection. Scabies is often transmitted during sexual intercourse, though the reason is prolonged skin contact and hence it's not categorized as STD.

Since itching is severe, when the infected person tends to scratch the affected area, the mite is transmitted to other areas through the infected fingernail used for scratching. Itching is at it's peak during the nights and many scratch while asleep, intensifying the problem further. The areas affected the most include armpits, waistline, around the wrist, soles, elbow, around breasts, male genital area, buttocks, knees and shoulders. However,f or children scalp, face and neck are common targets along with palms and soles. Timely diagnosis and effective treatment is a must to cure and prevent reinfection of scabies.
