Scabies, which is one of the earliest known skin disease, is a highly contagious skin condition caused by infestation of microscopic parasite called Sarcoptes Scabeie. This microscopic itch mite can be hardly seen by the human eye and it settles in the human skin where it lays its eggs. Also known as seven year itch, this skin problem is usually passed on to a new host by direct skin contact. This is manifested by extremely itchy red rashes on the skin which usually affect the hands, wrist, feet, buttocks, back, elbows and external genital areas.

Several treatments and medications have been prescribed to get rid of scabies. Unfortunately, the most effective treatments are also very expensive, but alternative medications are also available. The most common treatments are topical ointments and creams and oils, especially formulated liquid and bar soaps and for more severe cases, oral medications maybe prescribed by doctors.

Permethrin, a synthetic chemical which is commonly used as insect repellent and insecticide is the first-line treatment for scabies. It is proven to be the most effective treatment to get rid of parasites causing scabies. It is applied at night before bedtime from the neck down to the legs and left to sink into the skin and washed off the following morning. Duration of treatment process is up to seven days. The only setback of this ointment is it is quite expensive as compared to other medications.

Crotamiton, a lotion-based medicine is also an effective scabies and anti-itch treatment. It soothes and relaxes the affected area and is applied two to three times a day every other day. It is left in affected skin areas for 48 hours before washing it off. Ivermectin, an anti-parasitic oral medicine is also used for epidermal parasitic skin diseases such as scabies. Lindane preparation, an alternative medicine was also commonly used but there are now medical issues of it being toxic which might have harmful effects to human.

Sulphur, in ointment and soap form, is a safe and effective treatment for scabies. It has been used for centuries to kill the itch mites, there are proven cases of its efficacy and it is actually ranked by the IFD as an effective treatment for the said skin problem. Most medications are very effective but to avoid re-infestation, treatment should include all household members or the whole community. It is the best way to manage and get rid of scabies once and for all.

You would need to treat your whole family. But for a 6month old you would certainly need to use sulfur treatments as permethrin is dangerous and restricted from use on pregnant women and children!
