Perhaps one of the most contagious skin infections that people could ever have is scabies, or as it is more colloquially known, the seven year itch. This type of skin infection usually occurs among humans, and is caused by a tiny parasitic mite called Sarcoptes scabei which burrows under people’s skin, which causes an intense allergic itching, rash and contagion.

Basically, scabies rashes spread quickly under crowded conditions; large groups of people living or working together in close contact provide the perfect platform for a scabies infestation. The rash causing mites can be transmitted from person to person via skin contact, the sharing of objects or even washing clothes together, although touching is the most common mode of transmission. Scabies mites are very sensitive to their environment which is why they can only stay off the host body for 24-36 hours. As for the symptoms which might be visible for a month or two after the mite infestation, these usually include rashes, small red blisters, a relentless itch, papules or bumps that can contain blood crusts which can take place on any part of the body.

There are several ways to treat and eradicate scabies rashes and the mites that cause them. While changing your diet can’t really kill off a scabies infestation, it can boost your immune system, which will then be better able to fight off the infection these mites cause. There are also foods that have been known to have anti-bacterial abilities, garlic and onions being among these. So there are changes you can make to your diet in order to help your body fight off a scabies infection.

Consuming garlic or onion has been shown to provide an increase in the body’s ability to fight off the bad bacteria that constantly plague us. Eating a few cloves of garlic, or a small onion, each day should help your body to eliminate these pests; while bad breath may be a side effect, it is one that is easily fixed by brushing, flossing and rinsing your mouth, and is a small price to pay to boost your body’s strength against infectious invaders. Garlic especially has been known to be effective against other parasites; Vitamin B6 is also found in concentrations within garlic, which is a wonderful vitamin for the restoration of health to scabies infected skin.

Black walnuts have a reputation as an insect repellent; while this has not been proved these nuts do contain protein, which is a booster for the body’s immune system. It may not get rid of the actual infestation, but it may reduce or relive allergic reactions to the mite’s bite, thereby lessening the severity of scabies rashes. In fact, all proteins can do this, so adding a few proteins to your diet will be a great boon to your body’s immune functions. Rhubarb, however, is a proven natural insect repellent in addition to being a valuable source of Vitamin C, which is a vitamin that greatly improves and maintains healthy skin.

Changing your diet to help fight scabies is a relatively simple means of helping to treat the rashes that are caused by infections of mite bites. Any food that contributes to the vitamin and protein intake of your body will help to boost immunity and fight off the allergic reactions these bites cause.
