Sulfur is used in a variety of ways. In agriculture sulfur is used to enhance the quality as well as the quantity of plants. It is an added ingredient that brings nutrients to the soil and stimulates the other nutrients within the soil as well. Sulfur is also used within manufacturing and chemical industries as detergents, carpets and yes, it is even found medicines.

Sulfur and Medical Conditions

When we have a medical problem we rush to the doctor. The doctor in turn gives us an assessment and prescribes what we know as “over the counter medications”. More and more we have turned away from natural forms of healing, to synthetic products.
Sulfur is a natural ingredient, which has been used to treat skin ailments for the past thousands of years. One of the skin conditions, that sulfur is known to treat is extreme itching. This is why sulfur is found in creams, to soothe as well as treat scabies.

Why Scabies and Sulfur Go Hand in Hand

Scabies are itch mites that live in the skin of a person. A person infested with these mites may not be aware until approximately six weeks after, when rashes and itching are seen and felt. If you have been infested with this you should be in seclusion as this is quite contagious.

Sulfur creams are the most common method of treating scabies. This is because sulphur is an antibiotic cleanser, it not only kills the mites but it destroys the eggs that are laid under your skin as well. As this happens, the pain as well as the itching is relieved, together with the inflammation and irritation that these burrowing mites cause.
If you are using a scabies sulfur cream on an infant it is recommended that there is no more than 2.5% concentration of sulfur within the cream. Adults can use a concentration of about 10%.

Even though scabies sulfur cream is quite effective when it comes curing scabies, inexpensive and sometime the first defence to scabies in some countries, it does come with a price. It is smelly, stains clothing and is all round messy. This however is a small price to pay to be cured.

Dosage of Scabies Sulfur Cream

This cream should be rubbed all over the infested person’s body, once daily. It should not be washed off after application, only of curse when take a bath or shower. Directly after this it should be reapplied. Scabies should be gone (or almost cured) by the fourth day. Some sulfur creams may vary.

If you are allergic to sulfur you should let your doctor know so that an alternative method of treatment would be suggested.
