So here is my story. A few weeks ago, I started having pretty intense pain in the back of my left calf, was particularly bad when I first would get up. There was a red patch about the six of a dime that itches like crazy on the back of this calf. I went to the Dr. who sent me for a scan to rule out a blood clot. It was negative. In the meantime this dime size are was starting to spread, the pain was subsiding, but still there. So she thought it was shingles. 4 days later, I had a full blown rash on this calf and a few small spots on the other calf and at the waist band of my underwear... all itched pretty intensely. I went back to the Dr. who said this was most definitely not shingles but looked like folliculitis because it had spread. She said it could be scabies, but did not look like what they would normally see for scabies. Well it is 3 days since I saw the Dr. the spots are now on my abdomen, butt, other side of waist and back of my thighs. I noticed a few small spots, individual, on my arms. I am frustrated, because I feel like this has been going on for several weeks and that my Dr. is just taking a stab in the dark.

I went ahead based on what I have read here and did an epsom salt bath... still itching. Suggestions? There seems to be a lot of knowledgeable people on here. Is it likely that I have scabies? My family & I traveled to S. America this summer and were in rainforest and many other places. My Dr. had indicated that scabies can be dormant for a while before starting up. My husband, not my children show no signs of anything, and believe me I am looking. I am washing everyone sheets every day and all my clothes and towels immediately after I am wearing them. I have resolved myself to sleep outside my bed, so as to not cause my husband to come down with this.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I still have 5 days of antibiotics for folliculitis.

Well if you notice groupings of lessions and feel an active itching primarily in the evening hours it certainly likely it is scabies. You would need to treat all members of your household at the same time to prevent continuously passing it around. Just monitor your situation over the next few weeks for these symptoms, be careful if your using anytime of allergy medication as this could mask the signs and symtpoms of scabies.

Folliculitus can be very annoying and can cause itching but the itching is nothing like that from a scabies infection as it is terribly discomforting if you have had it for a few weeks. Typically though scabies will not start showing signs for a few weeks as your skin begins to itch from the mites and their fecal matter underneath your skin.
