Bed Bugs Can Live Without Oxygen Options · View

Shockingly enough, bed bugs can in fact live without oxygen. Unfortunately those tiny insects that live in your sofa, mattress or favorite chair are able to survive without air for up to 24 hours.

This means that not all vacuum packed items are actually completely safe from these little creatures. If you unpack your new mattress, sofa or armchair, there is still a possibility that even though it was vacuum packed, sealed and brand new that it’s infested with bed bugs.

A bed bug (scientifically known as cimicidae) are insects, parasites if you will, that feed of the blood of warm blooded mammals. This particular species likes to feast on human blood, and that is probably the reason that they are found hiding in your mattress. Those owners, whose mattresses have bed bug infestations, can expect to receive tiny bites from these animals in the middle of the night, and so small that you cannot even tell.

Killing Bed Bugs

Since bed bugs can live without oxygen, how do you kill them? There are two common methods of putting an end to bed bugs, especially as it is rather unreasonable to wash your couch or mattress entirely: insect spray and through professional extermination.

Though insect repellent is typically affordable and readily available at most local stores, it requires you to spray down your entire piece of furniture or your mattress. However, this may or may not work as sometimes we cannot reach all the areas where bed bugs may be residing. Additionally, research has not proven whether repellent kills all breeds and species of cimicidae, so don’t assume your problem is over with this method of eradication.

The second form of treatment is to hire a professional exterminator who is trained in the use of chemical treatments to materials and items that bed bugs can infest. However, oftentimes these treatments cannot be done with occupants inside the residency, and you may have to wait to return to using the item. Yet with this treatment method you can feel confident that all bed bugs have been killed.

Even though this is technically not a method of treatment, throwing out your old mattress or chair may be a solution, however it is not to say that other surfaces of your home are not infected.

It is important to know that you do have weapons available in the fight against bed bugs, perhaps the hard part is figuring out that you have bed bugs. The best thing you can do is use products that really work so you can take back control of your home.
