Scabies is a disease which is contagious i.e. a disease which is very likely to be transmitted to other people or animals either by direct or indirect means. It is a skin disorder which is caused by mites; small and wingless insects that are known as the Human Itch mite (scientific: Sarcoptes Scabiei). These mites are so small that they are invisible to the human eye.
This disease is caused when a female mite enters into the skin. She starts laying 1-3 eggs each day trailing along within the skin. This causes itchiness and irritation in the skin, and the area gets rashes when it is scratched. Commonly, it occurs between the fingers, on the sides of the fingers, on the wrists, on the backs of the hands, on heels, elbows, armpits, waistlines and inner thighs. It can happen to anyone, male or female, and it is estimated that globally 300 million people are affected by it each year.
There are number of effective scabies medications that are available today. The medications that are prescribed to the scabies patients vary greatly in terms of its efficiency, toxicity level to the human body, costs of the medications and, of course, availability of the medications. Some of these medications include
Sulfur products and permethrin products.
At present,
Sulfur is considered to be one of the most effective scabies medications, as it is widely used and preferred by people as it doesn’t cause irritation to the skin and is well tolerated by the skin. It comes in different forms like gels and creams, and it meant to be applied externally on the affected area to provide relief from the itch and pain. One good thing about this treatment is that it is suitable even for the pregnant women, and for those people who have sensitive skin, as it has a very low toxic level.
So that this medication works the best for you, you have to apply the right amount of the gel or cream on the area. It is easily absorbed in the skin and it rarely causes a side effect; at the very least, it may cause a mild burning or stinging if it is used inappropriately. When you apply Permethrin, make sure that it stays on your skin for about 12 hours as it is necessary that it does its work. Also make sure that you do not overuse it thinking it may provide a quick relief. Usually, it should be applied twice but you should check with your doctor to find more about the usage of this scabies medication.
